5th Hot Sauce Tasting, Britannia Mills Hot Sauces

Fifth Hot Sauce Tasting, Britannia Mills Hot Sauces (May 30th, 2024)

This was our 5th “Hot Sauce” Tasting.  We had 17 invitees, 3 cancelled last minute, so we ended up with 14 participants.  Britannia Mills is from Quebec. I chose them since they had at least 10 different sauces, and I had seen them in Provigo, and they had a very hot one, to scare everyone!  I ordered the sauces direct from them, from their website, shipping was free, given the size of the order.  We did 10 sauces, and a bonus round of 3 more, which were optional, and very hot. The bottles in question were ;

La Ferme Hantee (B3) Fermented, Hell Carrot 6.5 9.8 $20.00 direct

I only removed their Blueberry hot sauce from the tasting, due to the lack of heat, and we only needed 10, plus 3 bonus ones (B1..B3).

We did the tasting outside, and we served home made ice cream between some of the hot sauce tasting, on the chicken wings.

Hottest
The hottest sauce, to no one’s surprise, was the 3rd bonus one, called “la ferme hauntee” (limited edition, hell carrot), and rated a 10/10, even by the company.  We gave it a 9.75/10, Alberto gave it a 9, others gave it a 10, some even gave it a 15..and a 12, but 10 is our scale…it is a limited edition, and isn’t even available on their site anymore!!  Roxwell picked that one to take home, when we drew names at the end.  He said he probably won’t ever taste it again, but he wants it as a trophy, since he did survive it.

The 2nd hottest, was our 2nd Bonus Round sauce, coming in at 8.85, was called “the Grand Reaper.”

The 3rd hottest sauce, at 8.5, was the Derailing/Derailment, our 9th sauce, in the line-up.  I didn’t remember this one being so hot in the pre-tasting, but wow was it hot this time.

Taste
The two that won on taste surprised me, since it seems people wanted some heat with the taste, I thought one of the first two would win, the pineapple/peach (“tropic hell fever”, the 1st bottle we tasted), or the cranberry hot sauce (Hotoka, the 2nd bottle we tasted).

The winners on taste were #3,Piri Piri style hot sauce (called Perit, Perit), with 7.6/10, and a very close 2nd was the Louisiana Style Hot Sauce at 7.5/10, called “Louise a Niaise”. It was the 6th sauce in the tasting, right after the Dill Pickle Hot Sauce.

Overall
The one that was highest in taste, and highest in heat, as a combination, maybe I’m thinking ‘most avg’, was the first bonus round sauce, called “Haunted Station”, or “Gare aux Fantome”, with 7/10 for taste, and 6.8/10 for heat.  Although the Derailment/Derailing got 7/10 for taste, and 8.5 for heat.  I guess my question is, is 8.5 too hot for most people…vs a 6.8..

Since we ate outside, and I was happy the weather held out.  Thank you to Sukha for cooking all the wings, and Teneille for helping me serve the wings, while I scooped the ice cream, in the latter stages of the tasting..

In terms of home made ice cream, the 2 most popular flavours, “very un-officially”, since there wasn’t much voting, seemed to be Blueberry and Coffee.

The Winners!

1st Place “Taste” (7.6 $12)

1st Place “Heat” (9.75 $20)

Overall Winner (7/6.8)

The next hot sauce tasting is July 18th, and will be “Maritime Madness” Hot Sauces.

Let me know, if you’re in!

I disqualified Rox’s ‘taste’ scores.  They were on a different scale, and didn’t make sense, sorry Rox.
