6th Hot Sauce Tasting, Maritime Madness Hot Sauces

Sixth Hot Sauce Tasting, Maritime Madness Hot Sauces (July 18th, 2024)

This was our 6th “Hot Sauce” Tasting.  We had 14 invitees, 1 cancelled last minute, so we ended up with 13 participants.  Maritime Madness is from PEI. I chose them since they have 35 different sauces, and I had not seen them before, in any store.  Sadly, I cannot remember who told me about them.  They also had a crazy hot sauce, at 1,000,000 Scoville, so that helped in making the decision!  I ordered the sauces direct from their website, shipping was free, given the size of the order.  I ordered 14, but their heat scale in my opinion was too liberal, a 3/6 of theirs was a 1/10 or 2/10 for us.  So I ordered another 3 sauces, in a 2nd order, to get hotter sauces into the tasting.  We did 11 sauces, and a bonus round of 3 more, which were optional, and very hot. The bottles in question were ;

I removed, Scotch Bonnet, Fiery Chipotle, Ghost Pepper, and East Coast hot sauces, in the pre-tasting since they were so low in heat, and nothing ‘remarkable’ in terms of taste.  Almost all the Maritime Madness sauces are 275ml, and are in squeeze bottles, which is very practical.  The more standard glass 150ml bottles, are kind of a pain, in my opinion.  These bottles of hot sauce are mostly $12.00 for 275ml, vs $12.00 for 150ml, so very close to double (83% more), for the same price.  Only the 3rd bonus “Just Send ‘er” was 150ml, and $20.

This brand seems to have 3 different lines, the “Simple” line, the “Fire Candy” line, and the “Maritime Madness” line.  Some are rated in terms of heat, on a 6 point scale, some are a 12 point scale.  It was rather odd trying to figure out the heat rankings, across their products when ordering, due to this fact.

We did the tasting outside, all the hot sauces were served on chicken wings.  I also served home made ice cream between some of the hotter sauces, tasting rounds.

Hottest
The hottest sauce, was the 2nd Bonus sauce, called “Ultimate Giv’r”, at 8.4 average on our 10 point scale. This was surprising it beat the B3, which has 1,000,000 Scoville extract in it, but maybe not enough of it..lol.  The 2nd hottest was the B3 bottle, called “Just Send ‘er”  coming in at 7.7.  This was a smaller sample size, since many ‘chickened’ out, due to the hype around the 1,000,000 Scoville.  The 3rd hottest was B1, with 7.0, called “Giv’r”.

Taste
The one that won on taste, was the Mustard Pickle, with 7.0.  In a very close 2nd place, with 6.9 was Candied Cranberry.  Third place was Candied Jalapeno, with 6.4.  I guess I should have ordered all the ‘Candied’ line, from them, for the tasting, in hindsight.

Overall
The one that was highest in taste, and highest in heat, as a combination, maybe I’m thinking ‘most avg’, was “Mustard Pickle”, with 7/10 for taste, and 4.6/10 for heat.  If you wanted to prioritize heat, but still get some decent taste, then that was Giv’r or Utlimate Giv’r depending on how much heat you can take.

Thanks to Tim and Teneille for helping out with the chicken wings etc.  It went a little longer than expected, it got dark, thank you for putting up with the bugs, and staying to the end.   The home made ice cream seemed to be popular.     I was happy with the new forms for voting/rating the sauces, voting worked a lot better using them.  No one forgot to put their name this time, yay!!

The Winners!

1st Place “Taste” (7.0 $12)

1st Place “Heat” (8.4 $18)

Overall Winner (7.0/4.6)

The next hot sauce tasting is August 22nd, and will be “Pimentarie” Hot Sauces or “Heartbeat” Hot Sauces, I’m still deciding.

Let me know, if you’re in!
