Well we’ve been away for the summer, last tasting was Gin, in June.  I went on a cool distillery tour in Quebec, that makes whisky, over the summer, but more on that later.

So we decided for our 4th rum tasting, we were going to do Caribbean rum, so we chose quite a cross section.  We have many countries represented, Barbados was represented 2x, but we had Martinique, Jamaica, US Virgin Islands, Cuba, Haiti, and Saint Lucia, all represented.  I’m sure there are others, but we can always do another one!

This was a smaller group, 9 people voting, I did have 4 others who took racks, but they had conflicts for the Zoom tasting, or didn’t want to be on the Zoom.

None of the bottles are crazy priced, in fact many are under $50, 2 are even under $40, even in Canada!  Some are hard to find in Canada though, Foursquare, and Real McCoy.  We do have one that’s hard to find in US though, and even in the rest of Canada, Havana Club, “New Regime”, orange label, is quite easy to find in Quebec, but hard to find everywhere else.  It didn’t do so great in the vote though.. 🙁

We also had two rhum agricoles, Barbancourt 8 year, and Saint James “Royal Amber”, neither one did so well, these are made with sugar cane juice, and have no molasses.

I was a little surprised by the votes, i would have thought Foursquare would win, but Appleton is not a bad choice, especially the “12 yr, Rare Casks”.  I was very surprised by the 2nd place of Cruzan, but the group decides!

The next tasting is Grappa, it will be in October 2021
