Tequila (3rd one, Tastings #12)

Tequila Tasting (Jan 15th, 2021)

This is our 3rd Tequila Tasting. The bottles in question were;

TT Label Description Category Rating Price (CAD$)
A Herencia de Plata Anejo 7.2 $50
D Tapatio Excellencia Gran Reserva Extra Anejo 5.6 $150
B Bandistas Extra Anejo 6.6 $75
E Cenote Anejo 6.7 $91
C Arette Anejo 6.1 $54
F Centinela Anejo 6.8 $85
G Tequila Rose (Cream) Cream 6.8 $30

We switched from Webex Web Conferencing to Zoom Web Conferencing for this tasting.  Zoom performed much better than Webex, the sound was clear, we had had a lot of noise, and sound issues on the last Webex tasting, no matter what we tried we couldn’t seem to fix it. Zoom was clear sound.  We used the polling feature of Zoom, which was cool, but we couldn’t see who voted for what, so that limited its usage, but it was still entertaining.

There were 3 people in the tasting that had some trepidation about Tequila.  I assumed that had been due to only trying the cheap blancos, from the neighbourhood bars.  I was glad they still came to the tasting with open minds!  You can tell by Kelly’s votes she still doesn’t like Tequila, but she says she does have a better appreciation for it.  Mike seems to like it, even giving a ‘9’ to the previous winner (Cenote Anejo).  Cathy was more like Kelly, not giving anything higher than a ‘7’ for Tequilas.  That’s what these tastings are about though, trying out new alcohols, and seeing what you like, or don’t like, you might be surprised.  It only costs $40, for 7 shots, this is less than most of the bottles in the lineup.

I was surprised Tapatio Extra Anejo did so poorly in our tasting, no one gave it higher than a ‘7’.  Its younger brother Tapatio Anejo, did well in our 2nd tasting.  Cenote Anejo,  the winner last tasting, came in 3rd this time, being beaten narrowly by Centinela Anejo, and handily by the winner Herencia de Plata Anejo.

I’d say besides the winner. the next 3 were very close in voting results, Bandistas Extra Anejo(B, 105), Cenote Anejo (E,107), and Centinela Anejo (F, 109).  A negligible difference, I would think.

The Winner!

The winner with 115 out of a possible 160 (115/160 = 7.2), was Herencia de Plata Anejo!!.  This was the first time a bottle in the “A” position has won a tasting!  It received mostly 7s to 9s, but it did receive one 4, and one 5 (both from those would were non fans of Tequila).  Cenote Anejo, the previous winner this time got a lot of 6s, and even some 5s, and a 4.  Interesting.
